A handsome book from in English from two Israeli publishers coordinating with publisher Hemet Books out of New York. Ben-Arieh has written a masterful, readable and well-illustrated book about the many ways that Western artists depicted and understood The Holy Land in the 19th century.

Chapters include coverage of the art of ''The Grand Tour,'' the monumental illustrations of traditionalist Victorians David Roberts and David Wilkie, and the work of landscape artist William Henry Bartlett. Attention is paid to Jewish illustrators, French Orientalists, and to the Pre-Raphaelites. A chapter on Art and Photography considers ethnographic and archaeological drawings. And much more, including depictions that would not have been considered ''fine'' art at the time: albums of illustrations and the illustrations of travel guides.
